The Advanced Systems Technology and Management (AdSTM), United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC) Office: Nuclear Material Safety & Safeguards (NMSS) from 27 February 2023 to 3 March 2023, held a workshop to train members of the Forum of Nuclear Regulatory Bodies in Africa (FNRBA), on various areas of review in Environmental Impact Assessment.
The 5-day workshop saw participation from about 40 professionals drawn from Nuclear Regulatory Bodies and Environmental Management Authorities/ Agencies across 7 African countries; Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, South Africa, Zambia, and Sudan, and was held at the Fiesta Royale Hotel in Accra, Ghana. The Director, Nuclear Installations Directorate of the Nuclear Regulatory Authority, Ghana, Dr. Emmanuel Ampomah-Amoako, opened the workshop with an address to officially welcome participants and commence proceedings.
The sessions took a hybrid format of presentations and break-out group discussions, facilitated by Richard Emch of the Advanced Systems Technology and Management (AdSTM) USNRC office: NMSS, and J. Peyton Doub of the USNRC. This format enhanced participation and broadened understanding as participants worked out appropriate solutions through question-and-answer sessions, peer discussions and research work.
Topics presented and discussed at the workshop include the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) Transformation and Streamlining at the USNRC, Site Selection, Non-Ecology Impacts, Radiological Impacts, Site Safety and Lessons Learned.
On Friday 3 March, the workshop ended successfully with a brief closing ceremony, where all participants were presented with certificates of participation.
