The Nuclear Regulatory is pleased to announce the appointment of Prof Francis Otoo as its new Ag. Director General. Prof Otoo was appointed by the President, His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama on 21 May 2025. He succeeds Ing. Dr Nii Kwashie Allotey, who served as the Director -General of the Authority from 1 July 2019 – 21 May 2025. 

Prof Otoo is a highly experienced academic researcher and consultant with over 18 years of professional experience in radiation protection or health physics, nuclear safety, and public health. He is renowned for contributions to national and international frameworks on radiation safety, policy formulation and capacity building.

He has impactful leadership and collaboration with institutions like the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), United Nations Committee on Scientific Effects and Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR), Regional Agency for Environmental Protection of Piemonte, Ivera (APRA Piemonte), and Fruili Venezia Guilia (ARPA-FVG), Udine, Italy and African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE), South Africa.

He is also a Health Physics Associate Professor at the Department of Nuclear Safety and Security at the School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences, College of Basic and Applied Sciences, University of Ghana. From 2019-2025, he was the Head of the Radon Laboratory and has been the Manage for the Radiation Protection Training and Consultancy Centre at the Radiation Protection Institute, Ghana Atomic Energy Commission from 2022-2025

In accepting the role, Prof Otoo said expressed hope and said: “I know staff have high expectations, so I look forward to us working together as a team to build a competent nuclear regulatory body.”

Prof Otoo holds a Ph.D. in Radiation Protection from the University of Ghana and ARPA-FVG, Udine, Italy in 2015. He is a member of the Health Physics Society, USA, International Radiation Protection Association (IRPA), Leadership Committee Member, Young Generation Network, International Radiation Protection Association (YGN/IRPA), Ghana Nuclear Society (GNS), Research Scientist Association of Ghana (RSA), Ghana Science Association (GSA) and the President of the Elites Club of Aboadze.

As the new Ag. Director-General, he will focus on advancing radiation safety and security for national development.
